At the American Journalism Project, inclusion is part of how we try to do our work every day. Equity is one of our organizational values, and we know that rebuilding local news in service of communities requires a team with different lived experiences, identities, perspectives, and areas of expertise.
We try to make that commitment concrete. We are transparent about salaries for every role, require diverse candidate pipelines for all positions, and have an active DEI Steering Committee that helps ensure our internal culture and practices reflect our values. We are also a fully virtual organization, which allows us to build a national team and create more flexibility for people with different needs, locations, and life circumstances.
Underrepresented people in tech should consider AJP because our Product & AI Studio is focused on applying technology to public-service problems, not chasing technology for its own sake. The Studio works with nonprofit local news organizations to help them build stronger, more sustainable, and more community-centered institutions. For people who want their technical, product, data, design, or AI skills to support democracy, civic information, and more equitable access to local news and information, AJP offers a place to do meaningful work with colleagues who take inclusion seriously and are still actively working to get better.
